Medal of Honor
The Medal of Honor is the highest award at the Vernon Police Department. It shall be awarded to any person who performs, with gallantry and bravery, at the risk of life above and beyond the call of duty, while engaged in combat with someone known to be armed and dangerous.
Medal of Valor
The Medal of Valor shall be awarded to anyone who demonstrates exceptional heroism in the performance of duty while exposed to a life-imperiling danger.
Medal of Distinguished Service /Distinguished Service Unit
The Medal of Distinguished Service shall be awarded to any person who has rendered a service beyond the ordinary course of duty.The Distinguished Service Unit Citation shall be awarded to any person who has participated in a group effort and rendered a service beyond the ordinary course of duty.
Both medals may also recognize those events wherein a person's diligence, perseverance, and timely judgment while performing a difficult task has resulted in the protection of life, the prevention or solving of a major crime and/or the apprehension of an armed and dangerous criminal.
Medal of Meritorious Service / Meritorious Service Unit
The Medal of Meritorious Service shall be awarded to any person who successfully performs an extremely complex and difficult investigation. The Medal for Meritorious Service Unit Citation shall be awarded to any person who participated in a group effort and who successfully performs an extremely complex and difficult investigation. Both medals may also recognize those events wherein a member(s) demonstrates exceptional skill and ingenuity in the apprehension of a wanted person or who provides outstanding service to the public or who continuously achieves excellence in the performance of duties over an extended period of time.
Life Saving Medal
The Life Saving Medal shall be awarded to any person who in the course of normal duty saves a life which otherwise may have been lost except for his/her timely actions.
Non-Medal Department Awards
Letter of Commendation
A department letter of commendation shall be awarded to any person who has rendered a valuable or commendable service on behalf of the department or the public.
Letter of Appreciation
A department letter of appreciation shall be awarded to a citizen or organization whose cooperation and assistance has materially aided the police department in the apprehension of a criminal, the prevention of a crime, or has unselfishly rendered a valuable or commendable service to the police department.
The Chief's Citation may be given for any act, deed, or achievement that the Chief of Police deems deserving of recognition.
Outstanding Citizen Award
This shall be awarded to a citizen assists the Department by preventing a crime, assisting a citizen or police officer upon whom a crime is being committed, apprehending a law-breaker, assisting an injured citizen or police officer while risking their own personal safety or saves the life of another.
